Options to Cover Your Windows at Home

Window coverings like blinds are a great option for people who want to shut the light out completely, or have some control over how much of the outside world can see into their property. There are many fantastic advantages to having shades and blinds. They have been around for thousands of years, but it isn’t until recently that people have started to really recognize the fact that they have so many benefits. They protect, for instance, against harmful UV rays, but also against rain splashes, chill, heat radiation and wind, while also controlling privacy.

With blinds, a ladder system connects suspended slates, and this system allows a use to close and open their blinds fully or partially. Many can rotate by as much as 180 degrees. A knob controls this and keeps the slats in the position that the user has chosen. The slats can also wrap into each other, so that the blinds are fully opened. This is the main reasoning behind Venetian blinds, and a number of variations on these now exist, although they all operate according to the same principle.

Vertical blinds, for instance, work the same way, but are more suited to large windows. Venetian blinds tend to have horizontal blinds, which can be too heavy for large spaces. Verticals are usually made of a synthetic fiber, which is more flexible and also allows for more design and color options. As it is a fabric, maintenance is very easy and generally only requires a user to wipe them down every once in a while. They are also completely silent in their operation. Some automated models now exist, but those are equally silent.

Then, there are solid blinds, which are usually referred to as ‘shades’. These have fewer control options, as they can only go up and down. There are, again, many different types of shades as well. Pleated shades, for instance, don’t have any spaces in slats. Honeycomb blinds have a really interesting shape and are said to be the best at insulating the home. Honeycomb blinds are often made of wood, but they are softer in appearance than full wood blinds.

The design options are almost endless. Some of the options out there are designer shades, roman blinds, wood blinds, roller blinds and Venetian blinds, but there are many more. Each has their own specific advantages and comes with very few disadvantages. If you are on the lookout for blinds, therefore, you need to think about what your needs are, and budget is likely to play quite a big part in that. Luckily, blinds are incredible affordable, particularly now that there are so many different materials available to make them. Wood blinds, for instance, tend to be the most expensive, but you can also choose to purchase the faux wood alternative, which has a very similar look but is far cheaper.

Take some time to compare your different options. As blinds are now available for purchase online, you can do this from the comfort of your own home.
